Sixteenth Post From Türkiye: Cappadocia

In January we had a long weekend so we decided to take a quick trip to Cappadocia. Cappadocia is only about 3 1/2 hours from Ankara so it is a popular spot to go for an easy and fun adventure. The area is full of cool geographical & historic sites. People have been living in the area for a loooong ole time and it was first called Cappadocia in the 6th century BC. There are lots of Fairy Chimney Rock formations and cliffs where people could carve out caves to live in. All kinds of folk have lived there from Hittites to Persians to Romans. The area is mentioned in Acts 2:9. Early Christians lived in the area and used the rocks for dwellings and churches and then the underground caves as places of refuge. It's a beautiful area and it was good times visiting.
When you're in Cappadocia you need to stay in a cave hotel.
Here is our room that was carved out of a rock!
Jack got this dish that is cooked in a clay pot. The bring it to your table and break the top off the pot so you can eat. A good show and tasty as well. Notice my elma çay (apple tea), if you don't have some çay  there is no sense in doing anything
I loved this fireplace! What do you think the chances are of getting it replicated back in the states?

A friendly snow man to greet us at the hotel.
The rock our room was carved from.

Some frescoes from the different chapels. I almost got tossed from the place since photography was not allowed. But I'm a rebel and I can't be stopped!!

 One of the dwellings.

A slightly offensive photograph opportunity.

Kaymakli, Underground City. This was really cool! We paid a local guy to give us a tour and I am glad we did. I fear we would have been lost down there and wedged in a crack, unable to get out without him.
The little holes were like windows where you could greet others and the holes on the floors that have grates over them where for protection. If invaders came in and it was dark they would fall in.

 Tiny tunnels we squeezed through.
Excuse all the white dots on these photos. Our camera lens got rained on.

Jack will probably beat me, but I can't remember the name of this place. I do remember that we were followed around by these dogs. That's something, right?

Maybe you didn't know this, but my husband is a bit of a goof-ball. Still, best zombie impersonation of the day. Sometimes being in Jack's army is fun.

Love all the pics! We need to come and visit Turkey and you. The clay pot dinner sounds fun, just saw how they make those on a Andrew Zimmerman food show. It looked delicious, rabbit heart and all :)

How long did it take to carve those rooms out? Did they not figure that making homes out of wood/etc would be faster?! My mind is blown!!! Looks like fun.

Those pictures of the caves make my claustrophobic stomach want to puke. You guys are way braver than I am.
