Mexico! Spring Break 2018

Our good friends Scott and Josette Knapp moved from Turkey to Mexico City and we invited ourselves to visit them for Spring Break.
They didn't leave us outside on the street but kindly invited us into their home!
Seriously, they are the best hosts and we had such a good time!
Our first afternoon there we set right out to visit the castle.
Along the way we stopped to watch Danza de los Voladores.
We climbed the hill to tour Chapultepec Castle.

If there was one thing Jack was excited to see it was all of the famous revolution murals.
There are plenty around and they are amazing!

Jack y Porfirio Diaz.
After the castle we wandered a bit to see some more sites in the area. We visited Monumento a los Niños Héroes.
We needed a snack to sustain us on our ramble!
Gorgeous evening in Bosque de Chapultepec!

The next morning we headed out to see more of the city.
We stopped to see the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heavens. As it was Palm Sunday it was super busy with worshipers.

Zócalo

Dancers waiting to entertain the tourists.
We toured the National Palace.
More amazing murals. These are by Diego Rivera.

Templo Mayor
It was the main temple of the Mexica peoples in their capital city of Tenochtitlan.
It was amazing to see how this city has been rebuilt over and over again on the same spot!

The museum was so interesting. So many cool and creepy artifacts!

Palm leaf decorations.
A fun street market was set up around the church.

Jack decided to go with a slightly smaller hat. I hope that guy in the background took that hat home with him!
We headed over to see Palacio de Bellas Artes. I am a sucker for anything Art Nouveau and the architecture of this place was a gorgeous example of the era.

More socialist murals. This one has all of the leading figures, Jack was so happy!
At this point we gave Trum his best time of the trip. We went to this classic cafe for some fresh churros, hot chocolate and some ice cream. It was spectacular!

The next day we took a tour out of the city to see Teotihuacan.
It was so awesome! It was also suuuuper hot! But worth it!
Pyramid of the Sun
It is the largest building in Teotihuacan, believed to have been constructed about 200 CE.
Climbing to the top with a sea of people.
View toward the Pyramid of the Moon.

Avenue of the Dead.

Sir, you are an excellent salesman, but no thanks.

After we nearly missed our bus back to town because we were bonding with people from Wisconsin, our tour leader took us to see the Basilicas. He was skeptical about the visions and the cloak but I thought it was a beautiful place and it is always nice to see devoted people trying to come closer to God.
New Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Best way to see a Holy Relic I have ever experienced!!!
The cloak containing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The next morning Josette took us out and I was indulged with a morning shopping trip for trinkets and handicrafts!
Mercado De Artesanias La Ciudadela
See, now he went too far the other way!
The Jacaranda trees were blooming and gorgeous!

After lunch we went to the National Museum of Anthropology.
Another great museum!

The next morning we toured the Monument to the Revolution and Museum.
Can you spot the gringo?
Pancho's saddle.
Later we went to see another amazing Rivera mural at the Museo Mural Diego Rivera.
It's basically a museum for this one mural but it's warranted.
Jack y Diego.
A puppy in the fountain in Alameda Central park.
Benito Juárez Hemicycle
The Angel of Independence

Scott took the next day off from work so we could all hang out together at the gorgeous canals of Xochimilco!

It was so fun!

Boat-side commerce.

We headed back into town to go the the Frida Kahlo house but it was totally booked, as it was a school holiday, so instead Jack took us to another house in the neighborhood. The house of one of his favorite communists, Leon Trotsky.
Is he is favorite because they look alike? He won't admit to that.
 Leon Trotsky House Museum
The very desk at which Trotsky was assassinated

Turret added for defense and security that didn't do it's job in the end.
Trotsky's grave.

From Trotsky's house we headed out and encountered the power of American Capitalism when we stopped for a soda at 7eleven.

We walked around enjoying more of this beautiful city and more churros at the same time!
Parroquia San Juan Bautista

We had such a great time with these two!
Other fun experiences:
Lucha Libre!!!!!!
Ballet Folklorico!!!!
Awesome food and lots of laughs!
Jack even ate a cricket.
Thanks for having us Knapp Family! Can't wait for our next adventure with you!
